The 1724 Wedding Penny Rug is a reproduction of a wool appliqué bed rug made in 1724 as a wedding gift. The flowers and horses that cover this design were probably favorites of the bride and groom. These types of images inspired early needlework designs that were used on rugs, bed rugs, curtains, bed hangings, and many other smaller objects. They were worked in appliqué, crewel, cross stitch, and needlepoint. Tongues were added for decoration and also for use as pen wipes. Finished penny rug is 15” x 24 ”.
