Penny rugs are marvelous examples of American folk art. Making something beautiful from something old and unusable...women have been very good at this for centuries. They have been making penny rugs and petal rugs since the 1800s using scraps of wool and bits of old wool clothing to make something pretty for their homes when money was very scarce.
Janet Wagner of a slice of heritage specializes in primitive and folk art design for penny rugs and miniature punchneedle embroidery. Our designs are reproductions and adaptations of historic textile pieces...samplers, quilts, penny rugs, hooked rugs, coverlets, and bed hangings. Other designs are based upon historic folk art themes.
We are honored to announce that Janet Wagner has been ranked as one of the top traditional artisans in America according to a panel of 20 experts from prestigious historic institutions. She has been selected as one of the top 200 craftsmen included in the juried Directory of Traditional American Crafts sponsored by Early American Life Magazine.
